Nikki Skuce – False Representation of the North

Nikki Skuce – False Representation of the North

Recently an article in the Raven Radio’s website KCAW-FM a non-commercial, community radio station owned and operated by the Raven Radio Foundation, Inc. of Sitka, Alaska. The story was about Seabridge Gold and its application for request for more time to court mine investors citing the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s asked for another two years after that.

Northern Confluence Initiative is a project of Tides Canada’s shared platform

HERE IS WHERE I HAVE A GIGANTIC PROBLEM.

Reporters are a subset of journalists. Many journalists work as reporters, but not all reporters are journalists. In some forms of media, such as radio or TV, producers or research teams, rather than reporters, are responsible for fact-checking. Reporters play a specific role in the news industry.

Nikki Skuce journalist who submits to The Narwal, The Province, The Tyee, The Edmonton Journal, Georgia Straight Vancouver’s News, The Hill Times and any other publication that will run her stories that are in fact just slanted campaigns are completely void of fact checking.

The problem begins when a journalist writes or tells a story that is completely void of fact checking, one where telling lies is just part of an overall game plan strategy, and one where you can pretend to be an expert on issues you know little or nothing about. Likewise providing false representation of a community you do not really represent.

Nikki Skuce is Ottawa-born and moved to Smithers after she completed her degree in from University of British Columbia, she is what I would call a career activist hiding behind a degree in journalism.

Read the claims made (in blue) by Nikki Skuce.

“This is a fairly Junior company,” said Nikki Skuce, executive director of
Northern Confluence, a Canadian conservation group critical of B.C. mining practices. “So they’re needing to find a big buyer — and the price tag is huge.”

The Smithers, B.C.-based environmental organization was among nearly a dozen to urge provincial regulators to hold the line and not grant the company more time.

She says B.C. authorities — similar to Alaska — have granted mine companies waivers to keep working as essential industries amidst the pandemic.”

First let me say it bothers the hell out of me that she is speaking as if she speaks for Smithers through her “environmental organization” Excuse me? Are you not the only member of this organization? What membership? This is a one man band website and totally owned and controlled by Nikki Skuce. Where is the list of board of directors? There is none that is why its not posted.

Here is a woman whose only contribution to society is via social activism and who regularly uses the press to manipulate the public. This radical activist who submits to The Edmonton Journal, The Vancouver Sun, the Narwal, the National Post and apparently anywhere else she can send her messages of anti industrial development.

*Note the project she is fighting could be a multi-generational mine lasting over 50 years and providing a huge economic impact to northern BC. Yes, smaller resource development companies sell on projects to other larger companies who are more capable: that is a regular part of the business and not a negative as Skuce implies. The scale of the mine project is so large only a few major companies in the world could develop it. The scale of the resource is a positive; not a negative.

In fairness we will share the response to the claims made by Niki Skuce in her article in the Narwal where she once again fabricates false claims.

Seabridge Gold’s Brent Murphy wrote a letter to Emma Gilchrist, Editor-in-Chief and Executive Director of The Narwhal highlighting the misleading information about the KSM Project published in the article titled ‘B.C. voters support mining reforms that protect the environment, make polluter pay: poll’, written by Matt Simmons, Northwest B.C. Reporter.

In the article, Mr. Simmons quoted Nikki Skuce where she used Seabridge Gold’s KSM Project’s example to support her claim that B.C.’s mining laws support projects even if they are located near important watersheds. However, he failed to mention that the proposed KSM Project successfully completed a rigorous independent joint harmonized BC-CANADA Environmental Assessment over a seven-year period (2007-2014) as mandated by the BC Environmental Assessment Act and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (1992) respectively.

He also failed to mention the substantial public support Seabridge has gathered for the KSM Project by conducting hundreds of meetings with community members, regulators, Treaty and First Nations. Seabridge also voluntarily conducted over 130 meetings/interactions with Alaskan community members, regulators and Tribes during the EA process. As a result of these meetings and feedback from all participants, Seabridge made $300 million dollars in design changes to the project’s capital cost

The letter was very likely a wasted effort as the Narwal is yet another mouthpiece of the EcoRadicals

Northern Confluence is solely a vehicle for Niki Skuce’s anti resource activism. It appears her Boreal Conservation job or funding ran out and she needed another job so up stepped Tides Canada. They funded her to launch this vehicle and keep her in a useful position that complements the work other anti development engos undertake in the region.

Below is a profile based on her own claims on her own website and or business called Northern Confluence – Run by Nikki Skuce. As part of her bragging rights or as she is using it as credentials, she lists organizations that Northern Confluence/she works in concert with.

It does raise a question of concern when you see organizations like Amnesty International in the list, meaning she is submitting extremely biased information, that the group will use to submit human rights violations. It puts into question just who and how many submissions does this human rights organization take that in effect, being used as pawns to manipulate an outcome.

Once again, we see another white environmentalist cashing in on appearing to fight for aboriginals while also using them as pawns to earn a living and manipulate economic outcomes in a region. The following are all part of her brag list.

Northern Confluence is a project on MakeWay’s shared platform. In simple honest language meaning a TIDES FOUNDATION platform. Inspired by the model of the US-based Tides Foundation they set up Tides Canada to provide tools to support philanthropy, and created a unique shared platform that powers social change initiatives across the country. Another team of ONE claiming to “Northern Confluence also works in partnership in the region directly with Indigenous communities, governments, hereditary chiefs and Indigenous Guardian programs.”

Nikki Skuce, Senior Energy Campaigner
Nikki joined ForestEthics in 2009, the sole employee in our Smithers, BC office. Her current focus is in stopping the Enbridge Tar Sands pipelines and promoting green energy solutions provincially. For several years Nikki worked with One Sky on policy and practical programs in Canada, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Peru. She began to focus on energy issues after coordinating Canadian NGOs around the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002. Nikki has advocated for renewable solutions at the United Nations, Canadian, provincial and local levels, and has practical experience installing solar panels. Nikki sits on several Boards including the Canadian Renewable Energy Alliance, the Wetzinkwa Community Forest and the Smithers Sustainable Advisory Committee. She holds a degree in Canadian Studies and International Relations from University of British Columbia.

Nikki Skuce is Ottawa-born and moved to Smithers after she completed her degree in from University of British Columbia, she is what I would call a career activist hiding behind a degree in journalism.

If you recall ForestEthics has a large ethics problem and renamed themselves. They have now renamed themselves to “Stand”

Skuce also worked for the International Boreal Conservation Initiative, a US Foundation funded effort to protect and conserve the huge swath of boreal forest across Canada. She was listed as a registered federal lobbyist for IBCI and the Boreal Songbird Initiative from 2016-2018. Skuce is basically a paid lobbyist/advocate for US Foundations fighting against any development.

Skuce has no local constituency behind her actions apart from other mostly US paid environmentalists. No one has voted for Skuce to do this activism on behalf of northwest residents…no one has even asked her to do this. She is a total self-appointed saviour out to stop any resource development she doesn’t agree with or that doesn’t fit her view of ‘sustainable’.
